Between 1984 and 1986 he won three national titles of ex- Yugoslavia in 250ccm class and became the first ex-yugo rider, who won the highest award of the Yugoslavia in class 250ccm - "Gold helmet". In 1987, he moved to the racing class 500ccm and he became the only Slovenian and ex-Yugoslavian rider ever to compete in the strongest 500ccm a motorcycle class.
